While it is correct that it was written by JUDEANS and our word JEWS derives
from that geographic reference we in fact have very little idea what being a
member of that religion meant at the time. The most obvious thing which shows
how little we know is BYT aSTaRTe along with BYT YHWH in Jerusalem. Astarte
also had temples in Tyre and Caesarea. This is the goddess of Yahweh and
Ashara fame. All inscriptions found in bibleland mention both of them. All
votaries have both of them represented.
But it is after BYT YHWH is destroyed that the religion turns to written
material only. Most any write up will tell you that. Almost none are going to
point out Ashara worship disappeared with that change. That is just a hint of
the diversity. You will also find the Christians are occasionally called
Galileans as opposed to Judeans. We don't know how the Galilean religions was
different from the Judean religions but we do know something of their
differences from the Samaritan religions.
It does not take anything more than an open mind to read the gospels and
epistles as representing an apocalyptic cult expecting the end of the age and
the literal physical return of Jesus to rule over the world "real soon." This
is purportedly based upon the teachings of Jesus the Galilean which is why the
above digression into religious differences. From other surviving documents we
know there were several apocalyptic groups around. So we have apocalyptic
Galileans promoting an immediate return of this one man and as such do not
delve into the scripture of the Septuagint other than the perennial "as
foretold" invocation.
Being Galileans can potentially explain their contempt for the Judeans with
the generation of vipers and similar comments.
