The Allied rebreak into Enigma comes a month earlier.

Enigma decrypts alert the Allies to the German invasion
of Norway.

Allied forces intercept and destroy most of the German
invasion groups.

Norwegian reserves and Allied reinforcements defeat the
remaining German invaders.

This setback causes the invasion of Western Europe
(Case YELLOW) to be put back six weeks.

Meanwhile, the Allies having won a big victory through
Enigma SIGINT, greatly expand their SIGINT operations
and the HQs pay very close attention to it hereafter.

Thus, by the late June start of Case YELLOW the Allies
have learned enough to expect a major German thrust in
the Ardennes. French 2nd Army gets reinforced with
three first-class divisions and a motorized brigade.

When Case YELLOW starts, the French send 2nd Army into
the Ardennes to block the German advance in the woods.
The German _schwerpunkt_ stalls in the woods, strafed
by some of the hundreds of additional aircraft the
Allies have added in the last six weeks. The attack
further north conquers the Netherlands and makes some
progress against the Allies, but stalls short of
Brussels and Antwerp.

Hoth's panzer corps breaks through south of Namur,
but is neutralized by counterattacks from both flanks
and strafing by Allied fighters. Hoth falls back to
the Meuse.

By mid-July it appears that the great German gamble
in the West has failed. Hitler has the Luftwaffe
bomb Antwerp and Brussels, trying to force a Belgian
surrender. In response, British bombers from Norway
attack Berlin, spreading panic throughout Germany.

General Halder of the General Staff had concluded
after the successes in the Rhineland and Austria
and at Munich that Hitler was politically untouchable
until there was major "setback". That now had
happened, and most of the Army high command agreed
that the time had come to act.

On July 20, an explosion demolished Hitler's western
HQ, the Felsennest at Bad M=FCnstereifel. The explosion
was triggered during an Allied air raid on supply
dumps around Euskirchen, 12 km north, and was portrayed
as the effect of a stray Allied bomb. In fact it was a
truck bomb. (Three other explosions were set off nearby
to reinforce the idea of a stray bomber dropping its
load.) Hitler was killed with his entire personal staff.

Within a few hours, Army units arrested Goering, Hess,
Himmler, Goebbels, Heydrich, Kaltenbrunner, and Muller:
the core of Nazi political power. Various excuses were
given for the arrests. Goering was "hospitalized" for
drug addiction; Himmler was arrested for allegedly
plotting against Goering; and so on.

Schacht, the former Minister of Economics, became
Reichschancellor. (Hitler had fired him in 1939.)
Germany immediately ceased all attacks, and offered
to make peace on the 1939 borders.

There would be no reparations (except to Belgium,
Netherlands, and Poland), nor war crimes trials.
Germany would join France and Britain in demanding
that the USSR withdraw from Poland.

The Allies accepted.
