How about he keeps Hitler at arm's length (privately sensing him to be
a madman) and maintains a strict neutrality throughout the war?
He writes his memoirs in 1960, "When the Trains Ran On Time", at the
age of 77 telling of his struggles to bring Italy into the Twentieth
Century. He dies of a heart attack in 1967, while playing with one of
his grandsons in his garden and the country mourns his passing.
