This is exactly what Jacques Soustelle and other Gaullists advocated in the
mid-1950's and what they thought bringing de Gaulle back to power would
accomplish. Critics like Raymond Aron objected by raising a fear that has
become very widespread in more recent decades: "'The rate of demographic
growth is too different on the two shores of the Mediterranean to allow these
peoples, racially and religiously different, to be part of a single
community.'...It was thus unsurprising that Jacques Soustelle would so
opppose him [Aron], for as governor general of Algeria he had trumpeted the
policy of integration, and as a key player in de Gaulle's return to power, he
helped effect the extension of full citizenship (including the vote) to all
Algerians." http://books.google.com/books?id=Lr3vcmMtaNoC&pg=PA70 De Gaulle
of course ultimately took Aron's side on this issue, and Soustelle supported
the OAS in its revolt against de Gaulle's "betrayal."
(Soustelle incidentally is a fascinating man; we usually think of the OAS as
"far right" yet Soustelle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Soustelle was
originally considered one of the most "left-wing" of the Gaullists, an early
anti-fascist and a distinguished Mesoamericanist with a deep sympathy for the
Aztecs. He saw no contradiction, supposedly saying, "Il faut défendre les
pieds-noirs comme les Aztèques"...)
