My uncle (who had emigrated from Belfast to Canada in 1935) served in
RCAF ground crew in Northern Ireland and except for the raids on
Belfast in Feb and May 1941 had a very quiet war up till then seeing
his family regularly (much to the annoyance of his wife who was in
Toronto with 2 pre-school aged kids for the duration). Sometime during
the summer of 1941 he was sent to Egypt well behind the enemy lines -
his job was to keep the plaines airborne. He later served in Italy and
northern France - but with the exception of the Belfast air raids
never came under enemy fire.

That said there was never a prouder Legionaire than my uncle...

OK I'll give you LBJ - but as for the US Navy hasn't it (with the
exception of the US Civil War era) always been considered the Senior
Service?
