Civil war makes neat precedent... but the fact is that, without
abolitionism and the scepter of fighting slavery, people are a LOT less
willing to die to preserve the union.
Especially in some distant, far-off, non-contiguous land. Heck, how
many Americans would really accept their young men and women dying to
keep CALIFORNIA American against the wishes of its people, let alone
Hawaii?
