"I'm proud of my Irish origins as well, but the multiple PODs you have
here
put this out in ASB territory."
Far Fetched, ah maybe. But not impossible. All I need is historical
events to take out the world's navel powers by Barbarian (and greedy
Spainish) armies. Ireland, thanks to Saint Patrick, was in the process
of develope healthy appetite for literature. My goal is buy them enough
time for Ireland to start it's own industrial revoultion. For this, I
require Ireland to be at the Crossroads between indigenous, trading
American empires (which require the norse introducing ponies and
domestic animals, something not impossible) and the continant powers.
(France, Spain, Germany, people without a tradition of sailing).
"Viking assimilation with preservation and expansion of marine
technology
would be absolutely vital. Maybe a seaside monastery is shown a
measure of
mercy by a forward-looking Viking raider. Perhaps, before burning a
book
during a raid, his eye falls upon a sketch of a Roman trireme, and he
then
develops a healthy fascination for classical explanations of
hydraulics.
Instead of murdering everyone and torching the place, he and his
successors
settle and set up the equivalent of a naval college."
I can see how this would help. Ireland assimlating the Vikings without
them pillaging Irish abbeys would help. My way seems to work, but this
is just as valid.
